My Notes for Civil Services GS Papers

Hi,

Here are some of my notes -

10. Ethics - I never read too much on this paper. I referred only a case study book by Donald Menzel. Whatever definitions etc appeared in this book, I tried to cover them. I never referred to any other source (including various school of philosophies) as to me this paper is more about your logical thinking and problem solving approach rather than you knowing some theoretical frameworks. Just think on your own feet in this paper.

11. Polity - For it, Laxmikant is more than sufficient. Apart from it, read newspapers and note down the current developments. Past years' papers can also be helpful.

I hope they will be helpful.

They also include a tentative study plan and strategy for these topics in the beginning of the notes.

If you notice a discrepancy, or have some suggestion or feedback, please leave a comment here.

Best of luck!
Nitin Sangwan

    1. Typing speed can be improved only after practice. So, after a few months, you should be able to type decently fast.

    1. I would suggest that you should not overlook the basic books. Reading from at least two sources (like your own notes or some other person's notes and some standard books) give you an enriched perspective and also helps in a kind of revision. For prelims, it is utmost important that you read thoroughly the basic books and material as around 50 percent questions come from there and you require only 50% to clear the cutoff.

Further, whatever book lists and sources I have mentioned above are sufficient for your prep. Just read them. I would like to help if you have difficulty regarding a particular topic, in that case please write back.

Topics of paper 1 and 2 related to society are very commensensical and if you are reading newspaper and magazines well than you should not have any issues in attempting those questions.

    1. Hi,

Polity is more or less commonsensical as you read daily something or other about it in newspapers and when you read it a few times, you almost internalise it.

Secondly, past years' experience show that not many questions have been asked from the later chapters. So, you may pay a little less attention to them.

Sir, can you please shed some light on preparation of the GS-1. The answer writing style and method you followed.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Om,

GS1 is the most extensive paper of all 4 GS papers, so, it requires the most extensive preparation as well. SO, the first thing is that you work hard in this area and don't leave any single topic uncovered (especially, culture and world history part).

Secondly, while writing your answers, be to the point and cover as many dimensions as possible. Wherever possible write in form of points, so that examiner can also read your answers easily.

Thirdly, don't bother yourself too much regarding writing and introduction or conclusion. Just write whatever is asked.

And finally, manage your speed and content so that you are able to finish the whole paper.

      Delete
    2. Hi Nitin,

Thanks for the quick and quite comprehensive reply.
I just one more question. I would be greatly if you answer this.

When you say cover as many dimensions as possible, what does it mean. Question GS-1 are quite straight forward. How can we bring more dimensions into it. Can you please explain this( with an example if possible)

      Thanks a lot in advance.

      Delete
    3. Hi Om,

When I say that cover as many dimensions, I mean to say that - the issue may have some historic causes, political causes, geographical factors, social conditions affecting it and so on. There can be so many. There can be simply ideological differences for the emergence of that issue. You have to think on all these and many other lines.

    1. Hi Venkat,

For Bhakti movement, refer my culture notes.

For system of administration in different dynasties and important measures introduced by the different rulers and tax collection, read NCERT books only. You cannot read too much about every dynasty. Systems of administration that have been asked previously were very famous or pioneering, so you need to pay your attention on only those areas.

Try to note down questions asked in previous years and google the topics.

You may also google these headings directly and you shall get some good write-ups online.

You need not learn much about founders of kingdoms as such questions are no longer asked.

All the sources contain more or less the same stuff. But starting with NCERTs help because they are easy to understand and are very well written. There is no rule as such, you may read from anywhere anytime. The whole point is that you should be comfortable in that and should be able to cover the syllabus as well.

    1. Hi,

You can join some library in local if you get less time at home.

Secondly, if you are financially well-off and can afford coaching, then you can go for it. It will help you in being regular. I am not sure about Mr Balyan or any other Delhi coaching institute as I had little experience of them.

    1. Hi Jasmeet,

At the beginning of each of these notes, I have mentioned some other sources also. Please refer to those as well.

Further I have also shared a list of some basic books in one of my posts. Please go through that as well.

Apart from that, if you are still left with time, read any other quality resources. Reading more never harms :)

Initially it can be so. However, with time you should be able to catch-up. Try to devote some more time by cutting time from other activities.

    1. Hi Meghwal,

To remain safe, it is not about number of attempts, but correct attempts. Cutoff generally remains 55% or so. To be safe, 60% is safe attempt.

  83. First of all congratulations to you sir for your achievement...
I want to ask you that considering the case that minimum to the minimum time is left for preparation and modern history is to be covered yet.
Then your notes on modern history would suffice or a person should go for bipin Chandra or spectrum.
    Thanks
