  6. sir, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and study material.
sir apart from material, we would like to know being a fresher and being in such a competitive environment, how to stay motivated that we are doing it in right direction.
should we set target that we need to complete this amount of syllabus in this much of time and at least how many times do we need to do whole syllabus again and again till exam.
what should be the strategy towards the exam(if the only aim is to clear the exam in first attempt itself).

    1. Hi,

For staying motivated, you have to first internalize the fact that you will not compromise with your goal at any cost. What you have decided is the final thing.

Having targets (but realistic ones) is always a good idea. Set them as per your capacity. It brings some amount of discipline int the preparation.

Regarding number of times you should revise, it is very personal thing. But yes, you should always revise what you read.

The strategy is - a lot of hardwork - more than the others do.

  7. Sir is it good to have mechanical engineering as optional (just completed my btech and the subject is of my interest).
Read comments from some previous ias topper having mechanical as optional(including a gate topper) to not to choose mechanical as optional and prefer other regular subject.
I went through previous year question papers. Few questions are of PG level too.
Sir is it scoring subject. Should I go for it.
(Sir Please don't say you had other optional so can't tell, you were also an engineering student, any suggestion from you will be quite valuable for me)
    Thank you sir

How one should go about preparation?? Either to complete one subject first than go for another subject or study multiple subject together say history for 2 hours, geography for 2 hours etc...

    1. Hi Shalini,

Though there is no fixed rule regarding g reading, but if you get bored by reading g one subject, then you can change. Ultimately you have to cover everything. It doesn't matter if you chose either way. At the end of the day you have to complete whole syllabus.

Yes it is perfectly OK. Even in my 4th attempt, I used to have the same feeling before prelims despite the fact that I used to be over-prepared. Prepare hard, leave the rest to your God. Never take too much stress, it is never going to help. This exam is not everything in your life. Just think about it.

Hi Sir, Your attempt towards gradual improvement with sheer hard work is commendable.I gave attempts to UPSC without my 100% dedication.I was unsuccessful due to my mistake of giving importance to family problems and compromising with my goal.I have been a topper in my school and graduation but my performance weakened thereafter. It's been now 3 years since completion of my masters and i still stand nowhere.I would just like to know how i should re approach this exam to fulfill my dream? UPSC is never biased towards a candidate's antecedents. So, shed your all apprehensions regarding job and gap year.

Secondly, you had been a bright student and have definitely it in you. You just need to resharpen your focus and focus ahead in life. Bury your past for a brighter future.

I wrote mains 2015 but couldn't clear. I found lack of note making was the one of main reason behind my failure. So i want to prepare a comprehensive notes now. I saw your notes, it is very good and cover all information.

But my doubt is do we need to write total concepts or just notes with key words to recollect easily?
After making notes, did you refer the standard books again from which you have prepared note?(Example after preparing a good notes on culture did you read NIOS culture again?)

    Thanks for response sir

Then suggest me what can I do ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi,

Yes this is true. But this is not because that there is a bias in UPSC. But I personally feel that not many motivated people opt for Hindi medium. As a result, they have also failed to create material of their own which can benefit other aspirants like you.

But this is not to discourage you. The only thing is that you might have to work a little bit extra to make your own notes and material.

    1. Hi,

Your predicament is a common one, but you have to realise that you cannot ride two horses at the same time. If your ultimate goal is civil services, it has to be over and above everything - including your current assignment.

Don't feel guilty about the lackluster performance in your current assignment. You have only 12-14 hours in a day and you can use them only at one thing effectively.

I too have to take a call when I faced this situation and I was clear that my current job is not my destiny and I have to move away from it. The sooner you do, better it will be.

First of all, focus on the basic material - like Polity, History etc. After that you can read last 15-20 years of papers as that will give you an idea about the kind of questions that UPSC asks. Finally, read the current affairs editions any popular institution. If time is left, solve as many as practice question papers.
